Poynt

Below you'll find a list of answers to Frequently Asked Questions for Poynt Beta for the BlackBerry. You can also contact us if your question has not been answered, or if you wish to share any comments or suggestions.

    • Why do I get an "unsupported device" message when I try downloading Poynt Beta?
    • You may get this message from a supported device if your browser is running in emulation mode.

To change this, from your main screen select Browser → Options → Browser Configuration → Emulation Mode and change the setting to BlackBerry.
    • Why don't my maps work?
    • BlackBerry Maps must be installed on your device to access features such as Map Listing and Map Route. To download, go to http://na.blackberry.com/eng/devices/features/blackberry_maps.jsp.

This application is disabled on some networks.

We are currently working to include other mapping applications in Poynt. Stay tuned for developments on this feature.
    • Why can't I get GPS locates on my device?
    • Not all BlackBerry smart phones are GPS capable. If you are on a Wi-Fi device you will not be able to access this feature.

Poynt currently does not have GPS access on the Verizon and Alltel networks. We are working to allow GPS access via these carriers. Stay tuned for future developments on this feature.
    • Do I need a GPS-enabled device to use Poynt?
    • No. With any supported BlackBerry device you can still use Poynt by setting your location manually.

Poynt also features IP Lookup for Wi-Fi devices that can detect your location automatically. As long as your device is connected to a Wi-Fi network, you have access to this feature.
    • I get a "503 error" when I try to use Poynt. What's the deal?
    • Some carriers block access to Poynt when a WAP browser is used. If you are encountering this problem, try changing your default browser.

To do this, from your main screen select Browser → Options → General Properties → Default Browser. Change the setting from WAP to BlackBerry browser (or Internet browser, if available).
    • Does Poynt work outside North America?
    • Poynt is available only in Canada and the United States at this time. However, we have plans to expand our service into Germany and other European countries beginning in the Fall of 2008. Watch for announcements in the near future.
    • How often is the application updated?
    • Because Poynt is in beta release, updates to features and functionality occur frequently.
    • How can I make sure I have the latest version?
    • The latest version is displayed at http://m.mypoynt.com - check this against the version displayed in "About Poynt" which you can access from the menu button.

If a newer version is available, you're able to download it without deleting the version on your device.
    • What devices are supported?
    • We support models 8700 and newer with BlackBerry Operating Software 4.2.1 or later.
    • Is Poynt available on all carriers?
    • Poynt is available on most carriers in Canada and the U.S. You may encounter limitations in service on certain carriers who restrict access to the GPS system or to BlackBerry Maps.
    • Can I save search results to my BlackBerry's address book?
    • Yes. You can save details of business or theater listings including phone numbers and addresses to your BlackBerry address book by clicking the Menu button (BlackBerry logo, or center button on 8700 series phones) and selecting "Add to Address Book."

You can also search around any entry saved in your address book that has an address, zip code or postal code by clicking the menu button and selecting "Search with Poynt."
    • How can I exit Poynt without losing my search results?
    • You can have Poynt operate in the background by pressing the Call End (red) button. Your session will resume where you left off the next time you click the Poynt icon.
    • How do I switch between miles and kilometers?
    • You can toggle between miles and kilometers by clicking the Menu button (BlackBerry logo, or center button on 8700 series phones), then selecting Options and Settings → Distance Units. Make your selection then press Save.
    • How can I clear my search history?
    • To clear your search history, click the Menu button (BlackBerry logo, or center button on 8700-series phones), then select Options and Settings and click the Clear History button.
